 Metrics and Analytics: LJ 3

After reading the "We Are Data" articles and the reading from the previous modules, I have realized and understood better of how the internet really works with what we search and love. It explains about how algorithms assemble, and control, our datafied selves and our algorithmic futures. The reading "What is an RSS Feed? (And Where to Get It)" describes and explains the definition of an RSS Feed and how they actually work which gives me a clearer perception of what the "We Are Data" reading is trying to imply.

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication and it is a simple, standardized method of content distribution that can help you keep up with your favorite newscasts, blogs, websites, and social media channels. RSS Feed had quite a few process to function. Simple text files are used to operate RSS feeds. With this approach, material is extracted from XML, streamlined, and uploaded to an RSS reader for conversion into digital updates. "Simple information (such the site's name, title, and description) is transformed into a reliable source of fresh content through this method". I think this is a really interesting and smart way to find similar or common information from the website based on what the users have been reading.

We can find an RSS Feed on a website by looking on the site' main or home page. Some websites show their RSS feed as an orange button with the letters RSS or XML inside it. RSS icons do not all look the same. RSS icons are available in a variety of sizes and colors. However, not all of these icons include the abbreviations RSS or XML. To indicate an RSS feed, some websites use a Syndicate which has a link or another type of link. This is an effective way to let users have their own choice to use an RSS Feed and easily get their related materials and get notified each time there is an update.

With this information, I think it shows an evidence that the readings are connected to each other with a same concept that the knowledge that shapes both the world and ourselves online is being built by algorithms, data and, the logics therein. Overall, this features of technology can be really useful to us, however, we cannot have our own privacy as we surf through the internet and social media. It does not affect me in professional capacity whatsoever but I do comprehend the ethics behind the usage of social media and the RSS Feed but it is important to stay careful and mindful.

  1. Hi Rusell, as you say, with these readings we are learning how the algorithm works while you browse the Internet. For this reason, as you mentioned, RSS is a simple and standard method of distributing content. RSS certainly helps us stay connected on a day-to-day basis with the blogs, websites, and social media channels we use regularly.
